Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - Adults

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder which often persists from childhood into adulthood. People who are affected by ADHD typically show high levels of symptoms relating to poor concentration, disorganisation, impulsivity, hyperactivity and mood instability. It is a treatable condition which can be life-changing with the right care.

Jacobs Clinic offers assessment, treatment, follow-up reviews, reports and consultations for patients with ADHD aged 18 and above. The appointments are offered as video consultations from the comfort of your own home or as face-to-face consultations in our clinic.

A detailed assessment for ADHD at Jacobs Clinic involves 4 main steps:

Step 1

Completion of our patient registration form and questionnaire pack.

Step 2

QbCheck. You will be given an appointment for this test after we receive your completed registration form and questionnaires.

Step 3

A full mental health assessment including assessment of ADHD symptoms with our specialist doctor. This can be online or face to face.

Step 4

The same doctor will call to discuss your results. If ADHD diagnosis is confirmed, treatment options will also be discussed.

Assessment process

Prior to the assessment, you will be asked to complete an online registration form and a questionnaire pack with ADHD rating scale and questions about your background, mental and general health. It will also include a questionnaire to be completed by a relative, friend, partner or even someone from work. Don’t worry if you struggle to complete the partner/spouse questionnaire, just let us know and we will work around it for you.

You will be required to do a QbCheck before your initial assessment. QbCheck is a 15- 20-minute home based computer task that measures attention, impulse control, and activity levels. The webcam on your laptop or desktop tracks your movements during the test (it does not record images of you, only your movements). The results compare your performance with data from other people of the same sex and age who do not have ADHD. You will be sent full instructions prior to the test. This test will contribute to a diagnostic formulation.

A full initial assessment usually takes up to 2 hours and consists of a full mental health assessment and assessment of ADHD symptoms with a specialist doctor. The cost of the assessment package which includes initial assessment with our specialist doctor, QbCheck and a diagnostic report is £900. We can also provide a Reasonable Adjustment Plan report for employers or university if required.

Treatment

If an ADHD diagnosis is confirmed, then treatment options will be discussed and finalised in consultation with the patient. Following this titration review appointment will cost £200 each which will also include prescription.  There will be an additional charge for the medication at the pharmacy. It is highly likely that treatment will reduce impairment and improve quality of life.

Shared Care with GP

We strongly recommend that patients speak to their GP before completing the questionnaires to check if the GP will accept shared care arrangements with us. We will contact your GP, with your consent, asking for a brief medical history and current medication summary prior to your first appointment with us. We will share your diagnosis and treatment plan with your GP soon after the first assessment and will initiate a conversation about shared care at that time.

When you are stable on medication, we will request to move you to shared care with your GP for your prescriptions which, if accepted, will then be at the NHS standard prescription charges. To date all our patients have had shared care agreed with their GPs.

We will also have an understanding with you and your GP that if there are any concerns whist you are under shared care, we will be involved in your care and will be available for you or your GP. You will need to have annual review appointments with us to continue the shared care protocol with your GP unless you have been transferred to your local NHS Adult ADHD service. This is because GP’s cannot prescribe ADHD medication unless you are under a Specialist. Annual review appointments with us are charged at £250. We will support you all the way.

In the unusual circumstance that your GP does not accept shared care, repeat private (pink) prescriptions can be continued by the clinic for a fee of £30 per month plus the cost of the medication at the pharmacy.

National shortage of some ADHD medications

You may have heard that there is a national shortage of some types of ADHD medicines. The supply has improved for Methylphenidate preparations and we are able to start patients on this if indicated. This includes children and young persons. We are continuously monitoring the situation and supporting our patients through their treatment journey.
